Playing the Series Catch-Up Game

February 1, 2014 For Discussion, On blogging 13

must finish

My reading tastes have not always skewed towards YA.  But when I began my blog a year ago, that’s what I was reading, so YA became the primary focus of my blog.  Since I got a bit of a late start, I’m now playing “Series Catch-Up,” and it seems like February is a big month for sequels and trilogy enders.  So now, despite the fact that I’m behind on my ARC schedule (and feeling very guilty), I’m going to toss most of those ARCs to the side so that I can spend February catching up on books that I’m sure many of you have already read.  Here’s what I’ve got on deck:

Under the Never Sky trilogy by Veronica Rossi

Status: I’ve already purchased the first two books, and Into the Still Blue is in transit to me at my library.  And…drum roll…I finished Under the Never Sky today!  I really enjoyed it, and this has made me feel much less overwhelmed about all the reading I still need to do.

The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer

Status:  I’ve had the first two books in my possession for nearly a year, and I still have not read them.  (I know, I know.)  I’m first in the queue at the library for Cress, but if I love the first two books, I’m sure I’ll want to purchase Cress, too.  I also see that there’s a sticker on the cover of Cinder that I still need to remove!

The Archived by Victoria Schwab

Status: Are you sensing a trend here?  Do I need to say again that this is another book I purchased last year but still have not read?  I’m really looking forward to this because I loved Schwab’s writing in Vicious.  And I need to get my butt in gear because The Unbound is being held at the library for me to pick up.

The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd

Status: Here we go again…Purchased?  Yep.  Unread?  Yep.  I have the ARC of Her Dark Curiosity, so no library trips are required here.  This is the series I’m the least excited to read, because the reviews aren’t quite as great as they are for the other three.

As I put together this post, it struck me that of the four series I listed above, I purchased books for three of them at an epic book signing last year with Meyer, Schwab, and Shepherd, as well as Beth Revis, Marie Lu, and Carrie Ryan.  At the event, I purchased books by ALL of the authors, and so far, I’ve only managed to read the Legend series.

But WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN???  Clearly, I am acquiring books faster than I can read them.  One of my reading resolutions this year is lighten up on ARC requests so that I can start to make a dent in my many unread purchased books.

So, tell me…Do you have as much trouble as I do balancing purchased books and ARCs?  And I’d love to hear your thoughts on the series above!  I’m excited to think that I have some great reading ahead of me this month.

I have a lot of eBooks that I still need to read and a bunch of them are part of a series. I really need to focus on finishing them, that why I signed up for Octavia’s Read Sleep Repeat Series Challenge this year! I need to read some series I’ve heard great things about and finish some series that I have halfway or have read the first book!

I totally understand your dilemma ! Because I too have currently almost 70 unread books on my shelves which I purchased/won last year and haven’t had the time to read. So this year even I have had to cut down on my purchases of books. So far, so good.

I’m playing “series catch up” too. For me, it’s even the most basic series, like Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Gallagher Girls. Phew. I am SO beyond on all of this! I only started reading a LOT of books (mostly YA) last year. I feel very beyond sometimes too. Balancing ARCS and all the other books? I’ve juuust started with the ARCs and already I need to be careful not to over-request.

    I don’t think you’re alone! Haha

It’s one of the reasons I joined the TBR Pile Reading Challenge, to encourage myself to read the books I already own (versus purchasing new ones or requesting ARCs).

That being said, I was at Chapters on the weekend and they had a HUGE section of Bargain Books. So I might have found a new home for a handful…or two…of new books 😀
