Review: Delicate Monsters by Stephanie Kuehn

Review: Delicate Monsters by Stephanie Kuehn

I don’t usually pay much attention to titles, but “Delicate Monsters” intrigued me.  What exactly is a “delicate monster?”  After reading Stephanie Kuehn’s latest novel, I did some Googling and expected to find that the phrase is from a song or a poem or another book, and I wanted to see how it was originally used to get some additional insight into Kuehn’s ideas about her story.  But it looks like it’s an original phrase that she created, so I will… Read more »

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week a new topic is given, and this week’s topic is: Top Ten Books I’d Like to Read With a Book Club I’ve never belonged to a book club.  Unless you count blogging, and hey, why not?  But if I did belong to an “official” book club, the books below would be at the top of my list.  I’ve already read all of them, so I’m including… Read more »

Top Ten Favorite Titles of 2015

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish. Each week a new topic is given, and this week’s topic is: Top Ten Favorite Titles of 2015 A few weeks ago, someone on Twitter asked people to share some of their favorite titles of upcoming releases.  I checked out my GR TBR and saw lots of great, non-run-of-the-mill titles.  These titles are, first and foremost, unique enough to not sound like 100 other books out there.  The titles… Read more »

Review: Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn

Review: Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn

Complicit is Stephanie Kuehn’s excellent follow-up to her excellent debut, Charm & Strange.  Both novels feature some similar characteristics: a male POV exhibiting some psychological issues, past physical and/or emotional trauma, a big twist, a gut-punch of an ending, and Kuehn’s beautiful writing style.  This time, though, I was not surprised by the twist.  I thought it was telegraphed quite clearly at several points, and because I’d read Charm & Strange, I was already on the lookout.  But figuring out… Read more »

Each week a new topic is given, and this week’s topic is: Top Ten Books That Will Make You Cry If You Find Me by Emily Murdoch: The scenes of sexual abuse were very hard to read, but what really got me was the much-needed heart-warming moment between a young girl and a dog.   The Road by Cormac McCarthy: This post-apocalyptic world is so brutal that you can… Read more »
