Review: The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

Review: The Girl With All the Gifts by M.R. Carey

The Girl with All the Gifts might be my favorite book of 2014 (so far).  It’s certainly in my top 5.  Before I discuss the book, I have to discuss the synopsis.  I feel like I’ve been complaining about synopses a lot recently, usually because they don’t reflect the tone of the book.  This is probably the most egregious example.  The synopsis is written as though a very young child with a very limited vocabulary is speaking.  You would rightfully… Read more »

The Walking Dead Recap 4.9: “After”

“After” is the title of the first episode of The Walking Dead following the mid-season break in December.  After the Governor’s second (and much more successful) attack on the prison.  After poor, sweet Hershel took a sword to the neck and lost his head.  After Rick got the crap beat out of him by the Governor.  After Michonne rescued Rick by killing the Governor.  After the whole group scattered in twenty different directions.  Here’s where we stood at the end of… Read more »

Review: The Fury by Alexander Gordon Smith

Review: The Fury by Alexander Gordon Smith

At nearly 700 pages, The Fury is a monster of a book – nearly as monstrous as the image on the cover.  Unfortunately, before I was even halfway through, I was close to tearing my hair out.  Just end already!!!  I think this book may turn off readers who are drawn in by the cover and the synopsis.   You may think you’re getting a zombie story, but partway through this massive tome, the story suddenly turns supernatural, and I… Read more »

Review: Contaminated by Em Garner

Review: Contaminated by Em Garner

If only it were true – a special water that makes people lose weight.  There’s just one problem.  This diet potion turns users into raving, violent, nearly brain-dead maniacs.  Hmmm…maybe a few extra pounds aren’t so bad after all. While reading Contaminated, I was continually reminded of the fantastic Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion.  Unfortunately, Contaminated suffered in comparison.  Both books featured zombies who slowly emerged from their murderous states, all while being persecuted by society.  But while Warm Bodies… Read more »

Review: Zom-B by Darren Shan

Review: Zom-B by Darren Shan

This is one zombie book that doesn’t hold back.  When the apocalypse hits, it hits hard, and the majority of the brain-gorging happens to kids trapped in a high school.  They die in a variety of gruesome ways, occasionally with limbs their ripped off.  B attempts to lead a group of kids to freedom, and the group is slowly getting picked off. But before we get to the good stuff in this short (180 page) book, we’re first introduced to… Read more »

Review : The End Games by T. Michael Martin

Review : The End Games by T. Michael Martin

I’ve read through the current reviews on Goodreads, and one common thread is that everyone loved the relationship between brothers Michael, seventeen, and Patrick, five.  I’ll be the lone wolf who says I did not like it.  At all.  This child seemed straight out of 80’s sitcom land: way too cutesy and overly precocious in a way that made me (and I can’t believe I’m writing this about a young child) dislike him.  I suppose I can understand why readers… Read more »
